Modalities to Decrease Disparities
According to many experts, methods for decreasing disparities include the promotion of cultural diversity in the health care professions and cultural education in training of health care professionals. Do you agree or disagree? Do you think the nursing profession puts enough emphasis on cultural education and diversity in the field?

In my associate's degree program, there were cultural aspects that were addressed, but there weren't any clinical experiences that allowed for a higher understanding of these principles. In associate's degree and bachelor's degree programs, there should be more clinical experience with cultural diversity in order to really understand these concepts and help to decrease the incidence of health disparities due to cultural reasons.
ReplyDeleteOK here I go for the third time.....
ReplyDeleteDiversity is in the eye of the behold in as such as anything outside of norm is diversity. Whenever this diversity entails a gap, especially communication, that cannot be overcome, health care disparity can exist. Living in a highly globalized world, health care providers must receive education whether in academia or through continuing education. However, the generalizations normally presented can lead to highly prejudical views and care. Far better, as Becca eluded to, would be diverse clinical experiences such as could be experienced through volunteer activities in the community or out of the country.
I concur with your postings ladies, we cannot get all of our education from a class room; we must have actual experiential lessons as well. Community activities through volunteerism would be a great way to overcome stereotypes and assumptions. Getting involved with health care caravans and participating in free health fairs targeted at vulnerable populations are excellent means of lessening disparities and educating ourselves in the process.
